Scientific division:
- Radiodiagnosis and radionuclide therapy department
Department has 25 inpatient beds (15 for radionuclide therapy) laboratory of radionuclide diagnosis, x-ray and ultrasound study consulting-reom. Laboratory of radionuclide diagnosis has facilities such as computed gamma-camera “Tamara”. Block of radionuclide therapy is one of the oldest medical establishments for oncologic and nononcologic diseases in Ukraine. Every year 350-400 patients receive this kind of treatment. Radiopharmaceutical preparations on the basis of
131I, 32P, 89Sr; 198Au are used. For the first time in Ukraine, it treatment of thyroid medullar cancer was started.
- Radiotherapy department
60-bed department is the clinical base of Department of Radiology of Kharkiv State Medical University. About 700 patients with lung, breast cancer, that of female sex organs are treated at the department every year. The department has facilities for distance and intracavitary treatment.

Chemotherapy department
Every year this 20-bed department administers chemotherapy to more then 600 patients with breast, lung, genital, and intestine cancer.

Oncosurgery department
45-bed department is the base of Oncology Department of Kharkiv State Medical University. More then 1,000 operations for breast, thyroid, lung, stomach and intestine cancer are performed there every year.

Anesthesiology department with intensive care unit
About 900 patients (including cancer patients with radiation lesions, patients with radiation sickness, participants of the Chornobyl accident clean-up and those exposed to radiation at work, residents of contaminated districts) are treated at the department annually. About 100 surgical interventions for local radiation lesions are done at the department every year. About 1,500 procedures are performed at endoscopy unit. The specialist of functional diagnosis unit perform about 7650 examinations, including circadian ECG monitoring.

Gynecological radiooncology department
The 30-bed department renders medical aid to more than 500 patients with genital cancer every year. The annual number of surgical interventions performed at the department exceeds 400. The specialist of the department have worked out methods of surgical, combined and concomitant treatment for uterine body cancer with the use of the tumor cryodestruction as well as the method of radiotherapy in ascitic forms of ovarian cancer. Every month about 600 patients are consulted at the department.

Laboratory of Pathophysiology and experimental therapy of radiation lesions
The study of homeostasis under influence of low-dose ionizing radiation in experiment and clinical research; the study and development of modern technologies in the field of photomedicine with the use of low-intensity laser radiation for prophylaxis and treatment of post-operative complications and radiation reactions in oncologic patients; search of pathogenetic well-grounded protocols of accompanying therapy.

Laboratory of anti-radiation drugs
Research of the mechanizms of radiation lesions in hard (osteal) and soft tissues at izolated and combined exposure; evaluation of antiradiation effect of different preparations; development of prophylactic agents and therapeutic use of antiradiation preparations in general and local radiation lesions as well as in complex treatment in cancer patients. The laboratory is the base of State Pharmacological Center of Ministry of Health of Ukraine on pre-clinical testing of radioprotectors, radioprotective prescriptions, anti-radiation therapeutic means.

Laboratory of radiation immunology
Development of scientifically substantiated approaches to diagnosis and correction of radiation immunity disorders of cytostatic origin; creation of new scientifically substantiated technologies for improvement of radiation therapy effectiveness in oncologic patients by directed induction of apoptosis; working out technology of radio- and chemotherapy in the conditions of minimum toxic immunity on the basis of complex analysis of daily rhythms of basic homeostasis components of tumor carrier.

Laboratory of radiation endocrinology
Evaluation of functional state of the endocrine system in persons professionally connected with sources of ionizating radiation, oncologic patients at radiotherapy and in the participants of Chornobyl accident clean-up; fundamental study of mechanisms of neurogumoral regulation disorders in adaptive processes at exposure to ionizing radiation with simultaneous elaboration of methods of their correction; the study of expression of oncomarkers for monitoring radiotherapy; effectiveness at present the search of the ways of hormone-containing induction of tumor apoptosis for improvement of radiotherapy effectiveness is carried out.

Laboratory of radiation cytogenetics
Chromosomal biodosimetry in cases of accidental high- and low-dose radiation exposure; long-term follow-up cytogenetic effects investigation in post-Chernobyl critical groups and in occupationally exposed individuals to detect and quantify the radiation exposure and to measure the genetic impact; fundamental investigation in the field of clinical radiobiology to assess the cytogenetic effects in cancer patients undergoing different regimens of radiation therapy; cytogenetic and clinical laboratory testing of pharmaceutical preparations developed for radiation complications modifying and radiation damage treatment in cancer patients. Taking part in collaborative research projects the subdivision passed the intenational standartization; the verified in vitro dose-response curves for stable and unstable aberration yields under gamma-irradiation were built. The lab is well equiped to carry out the full-scale cytogenetic investigations, including conventional chromosomal analysis, stable chromosomal rearrangements analysis using fluorescence in situ hybridization technique and micronuclei assay.

Laboratory of clinical diagnosis
The laboratory investigates the parameters of mineral, carbohydrate, lipid, protein metabolism and hemostasis system in cancer patients at the up-to-date level. In its work the laboratory uses an automatic blood analyzer, immunochemoluminescent analyzer, complexes of modern techniques.

Laboratory of clinical and verification dosimetry
The laboratory creates the systems for quality assurance at medical exposure, works out and introduces into practice the programs for control of physico-technical parameters of x-ray units and equipment for radiotherapy, works out methodological documents on control and account of the doses in patients at different types of x-ray diagnostic procedures (including CT). The laboratory performs verification amd repair of dosimetry equipment. It organizes the visits of the specialists to various hospitals with the purpose of control of exit parameters of radiotherapy units. It provides dosimetry control of during experimental irradiation of experimental animals. It coordinates the work on postal TLD audit for radiotherapy units beams according to IAEA/WHO Project.

Central laboratory for radiation hygiene of medical personnel
The laboratory was founded in 1979 with the purpose to organize quarterly individual dosimetry control (IDC) of medical staff, to generalize the experience and analyze the results of centralized IDC in hospitals of Ukraine, at work with sources of radiation in radiology. On 01.12.2002, 5435 persons working with sources of ionizing radiation are under individual control. They are from 332 establishments of 24 regions of Ukraine, the Crimea, Sevastopol, Kiev, including 5190 medical workers (2243 medical persons, working with sources of Y-rays and 2947 - X-rays) from 283 medical institutions and also 245 workers of industrial organizations from 49 establishments of 8 regions. Since 1990 the laboratory has introduced the system IDAIS-PC which is intended for storage and analysis of the data of centralized IDC. At present this database contains the information about irradiation doses of about 10,500 persons.

Laboratory for scientific organization of radiological aid to the population
The laboratory maintains organisation-methodological aid to radiological establishments of 25 regions of Ukraine The laboratory is also responsible for organisation of introduction of the results of scientific work to the practice and prepares for publication “The Ukrainian Journal of Radiology”. Organizes conferences, symposia, consultations of the specialists, courses in medical radiology of Ukraine.

Department of scientific analysis and protection of intellectual property
The department is engaged in patent-information provision of the Institute's research work, works out and introduces into practice new information technologies (including Internet, technologies for patent, information research), the system for patent-information provision of the Institute's research work, protection of the intellectual property. Since 1996 the Department has had an access to Internet and creates and updates two web-sites "Institute for Medical Radiology" and "Innovation Medicine". It participates in international projects on information provision of research in medicine and radiology with world electronic resources.
