The Management
MAIN FIELDS OF WORK
RESEARCH WORKThe research work of the Institute is aimed at working out new techniques of radiodiagnosis and radiotherapy, methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of radiation lesions, improvement of dosimetry provision of radiotherapy, optimizing radiation load from medical procedures, metrology provision of medical application of ionizing radiation, prognosis and tendencies of scientific research development in radiology basing on investigation of information resources. The Institute is a clinical base for testing new radiopharmaceuticals and radiology equipment produced in Ukraine. An important field of the research work is development and investigation of the properties of anti-radiation drugs. Introduction of these drugs into clinical practice has significantly increased anti-tumor therapy efficacy in cancer patients. Great attention is paid to organizing and holding scientific events (congresses, conferences, seminars, workshops), advanced training of radiologists, medical physicists, dosimetry technicians and paramedical personnel of Ukrainian radiological hospitals. This facilitates introduction of the Institute's achievements to the practical work and improvement of qualification and professional level of Ukrainian radiologists. The HOSPITALThe 220-bed hospital treats about 4,000 patients with breast, thyroid, prostate, lung, genital, digestive system cancer as well as those with polycytemia and radiation lesions every year. Besides specialized medical aid the departments of the hospital participate in testing new methods of radiation diagnosis and therapy, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment. About 25,000 patients are consulted at the out-patient department. Since 1957 the hospital has been housing State Dispensary Commission for check-ups of the persons working with ionizing radiation.EXPERTISE ACTIVITYProblem Commission “Radiology” of Ministry of Health of Ukraine and Academy of Science of Ukraine has been working at the Institute since 1995. It is engaged in prognosis, scientific evaluation and coordination of research and specialists training in radiology. The members of the Commission are highly qualified specialists of the Institute, as well as Kharkiv and Kyiv Medical Academies for Advanced Training. The members of the Commission do a great work on expertise of candidate's theses and doctor's dissertations, research works, documentation, books, etc.INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATIONCooperation within CEU programs.Since 1993 the specialists of the Institute have participated in scientific programs in biological dosimetry under the aegis of the Commission of European Union (CEU).In 1999--2001 the specialists of the Institute together with National Committee for Radiation Protection (Great Britain), Institute of Nuclear Safety of France and Institute of Genetics and Cytology of Belarus Academy of Science worked on the project "Doses to the Belarus and Ukraine populations resulting from the Chornobyl accident".In 2002 Laboratory of radiation cytogenetics took part in SILENE Accident Dosimetry Intercomparison Exercise which was held by Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (France). Specialists from 25 countries of the world, including Great Britain, Germany, China, France, Ukraine, Russia, USA, Japan participated in the exercise. The accident was simulated using four schemes with different types of radiation (gamma rays, neutron, mixed gamma-neutron) and various exposure duration and dose rate.Department of scientific analysis and protection of intellectual property participates in INTAS project "Electronic scientific information for libraries and scientific organizations" which provides a free access to full-text information resources:"Springer" - about 500 journals;"Blackwell Publishing" - STM collection - 330 journals;"Database of free electronic journals" - about 4000 journals.Co-operation within IAEA programsSince 1997 Laboratory of clinical and verification dosimetry has participated in scientific technical programs of IAEA aimed at improvement of the level of metrology and dosimetry provision of measurement at medical application of ionizing radiation. The Institute participated in the program of intercomparison of methods of individual dosimetry control (IDC) at IDC laboratories of Central and Eastern Europe. Since 1998 the Institute has been the co-ordinator of the regular IAEA/WHO program "TLD ðostal dose quality audit for Co-60 ?-beams and megavoltage X-Ray beams" in Ukraine. During the recent years the Institute has participated in IAEA projects "Improved radiation protection in medical exposure" (UKR/6/003) and "National Postal Dose Audit Network (UKR/6/005).Co-operation in consortium on access to electronic resourcesSince 1999 Department of scientific analysis and protection of intellectual property has taken part in eIFL Direct Project "Electronic information for libraries" (Project of Open Society Institute and EBSCO Publishing company). This Project allows the access to electronic versions of journal published by leading academic publishing companies of the world.Participation in international research programsThe international activity consists in research co-operation with foreign scientific centers, institutions, foundations and other organizations, participation in scientific conferences, visits of the researches abroad to participate in scientific research, fellowships, and training.Since 1993 the departments of the Institute have taken an active part in the following research programs and joint projects :- Joint study project ¹ 3 "Diagnosis and treatment of radiation injuries" ; 1993-1995.
